Old Audis, adverts and feeling old!

19 Apr

I am a bit of a petrol head – I love cars and probably know far too much about them – I almost certainly fall into the geek category! I have always had an interest from when I was little, so have over the years purchased far too many car magazines to learn lots of exciting facts from.

It was cool at the time - honest!

To this end I have for years been a subscriber to Car magazine – it is a very good car mag – it tests lots of cars I will never be able to afford and has some lovely photography and prose within its pages. Amazingly it is 50 this year as well (although I beat it by a few months). The birthday is not the reason for the blog however – it is the adverts within it.

Many of you may have seen the Audi ‘ugly duckling’ TV advert, they use one of the first Audi’s to show how far they have come in design terms (it wasn’t a looker!). And I am cool with that, I was not around when that Audi was produced so don’t feel ‘threatened’.

However – back to this months Car magazine……

Within its pages there is a similar Audi advert – but they use 4 cars, not just 2 to show the development over the years. The third one is an original Audi 80 (circa 1975), just like the one my mate Paul Carters Dad had as a company car when I was 12 or 13. This is the first time (that I have noticed) that things that I grew up with are being shown as old and dated in this way – so ‘ouch’ that hurts Mr Audi!

So am I now going to start having to be careful what I read incase the adverts make me feel old?
