This weekend the wife and I have done something that we have both not done for years – camping!
We took the decision that due to ‘parenting’ duties getting more and more time-consuming, the chances of getting away for proper breaks was limited – so a tent was decided on as a good compromise. And what a revelation it has been! Camping is much more civilised now than it was when I was a kid!
We acquired all the kit last weekend, tent, bed (with electric pump), double sleeping bag (civilised) and gas stove which didn’t need matches – so this weekend was the first ‘shakedown’. We booked a single night (didn’t want to over do it!) on a small site near Ashbourne – which was lovely and I would recommend to anyone.
OK, so the weather wasn’t great, but the tent was dry, the bed comfortable (so much better than blow up beds used to be) and the double sleeping bag was acceptably social! And waking up with the view we had would be hard to beat at any hotel.
All the facilities on site were also as good as you could expect, and the pub in walking distance had some very good beer! So we are now agreed that there will be many more weekend forays into the wild when we get the odd night free!
I never thought I would say this having been on years of caravan holidays as a child (on some very basic sites in the North of Scotland) – but camping is actually quite fun and thoroughly recommended!
