Island fortress

Holiday home anyone …

Posted on Updated on

I discovered this property a few years ago when on holiday in Cornwall – they always say that an Englishman’s home is his castle, well this is as close as you are likely to get without a proper castle!

The property – Towan Island – is situated in Newquay and is currently on the market for just under £1million (that is the down side). However for your money you would be the proud owner of a three-bedroom house perched on top of a large granite rock overlooking the whole of Newquay. The property which was built in the 1930s comes complete with a garden and terrace with 360 views and direct access to the sandy beach below (when it’s low-tide!)

The best bit though is that at high-tide the property is completely surrounded by water, and can only be reached via a 70ft high, 100ft long suspension bridge – the only privately owned suspension bridge in Britain. The Island has become somewhat of a Cornish landmark and is thought to be the most photographed island in the UK.

This is only the third time this unique property has been up for sale in forty years. It was once used as a tea room (before the house was built) and it’s believed to have been owned by Sir Oliver Joseph Lodge (the inventor of the spark plug). The current residents have lived there for ten years but it’s said that the elderly couple are moving to avoid struggling across the bridge – understandable when you see it!

Any takers?
